Author’s Journey: Reaching No. 1 on Amazon

It was with great surprise on Friday morning to discover that one of my books reached No.1 on the Amazon.com Kindle Store. It was my well-being guide for eczema sufferers “How to heal eczema naturally: a quick self-help guide to learn the secrets of healthy skin” that reached the covetous No.1 spot.

Curiously this title has no reviews, and I had not done any specific recent promotional/marketing attempts with this title. Instead this past week I redesigned my official site www.CatherineVaughan.com and set up a Giveaway on Twitter of my Paranormal romance short story: “Another Realm.” There was honestly no shout outs by health/well-being bloggers, no giveaways on this title, it wasn’t mentioned in any news outlets. It just happened.

Success seems to be a curious concoction. I had in previous months blogged about this eczema title on my lifestyle blog CatherineVaughansWorld.com plus changed the book cover whereby no noticeable sales increases arose. Although this book literally overnight reached number 1 essentially I had spent 11 months promoting it piecemeal via facebook ads, blog posts, a YouTube video and so forth. During and after the implementation of these marketing attempts few changes appeared. Sometimes life is not logical and success cannot always be executed in a methodical manner. There were times when I was frustrated that my thoughtful and focused marketing attempts did not pay off, then in the one week where I focused so intently on increasing awareness of my fiction books: BOOM! My well-being guide reaches No.1. It is a most welcome if not peculiarly timed result.

Another classic and significant example of how ambiguous author success can be is in Paulo Coelho’s life. He had published The Alchemist and it did not take off for a long time. Then Madonna speaks about his book Oprah’s talk show of all places. Nothing happens. Therein are two huge PR opportunities 1) Madonna telling the world she loves it and 2) Having the book mentioned on one of the greatest talk shows of all time! Many more celebrities from Julia Roberts, Will Smith and former President Clinton are seen holding or have mentioned his book. Again, nothing happens. Finally it became as Oprah says a “phenomenon” and reaches The New York Times list with “no explanation.” The only token of advice we can get as confirmed by Coelho is how impactful “word of mouth” is and the subtext of patience.

So although I do not have a series of steps to advise ultimately there are key pointers to consider:

  • Remain dedicated with your marketing strategy regardless of results and be as focused and consistent as you can with your efforts.
  • The effort is the reward.
  • Success rarely happens overnight.
  • Even the phenomenal book The Alchemist was on a long journey before success struck!
  • The truth is it takes time, so be patient.
  • Don’t even allow titles/awards/positions to enter your mind in any part of the creation process. I didn’t ever think any of my books would reach No.1 I just focused on writing the books I wanted and at times needed to read. I just continued publishing books to fulfill the needs of others and either help or inspire them in some way.

The Media Mastermind turned Boho Photographer Joe Simpson

Joe Simpson is now a photographer based in Malibu. His career has been epic and a tad rebellious ergo Bohemian from his early days as a Baptist Youth Minister, to managing his superstar daughters Jessica and Ashlee Simpson plus his genius plan to give both daughters reality TV shows that catapulted their careers from music into most notably the eldest daughter’s billion dollar fashion line: The Jessica Simpson Collection. He has always been streets head of other music managers as seen by his initiative to produce reality TV shows for his musical daughters and his recent foray into fine art photography. This man may be behind the scenes but his vision is often waaaaay ahead of time.

Simpson is a creative pioneer in his own right whether exploiting emerging new markets such as reality television to producing music or editorial fashion photography Simpson serves the edgy trends ahead of time. I find him inspiring and respect him a lot, truth be told there’s not a whole lot of media/interviews on him. I wish I could learn more about him, about what drives him and influences his creative and executive decisions in his own and offspring’s careers. I think he’s a phenomenal talent with a discerning eye in the music industry and visual arts.

Sadly we don’t get to hear more about his vision as things tend to stray toward the superstar sisters he has raised and managed.

Joe Simpson is Bohemian worthy for his life-long career in the arts and music scene plus he has a forward-thinking ideas in arts and pop culture.

Ignore em’, trash em’. Rolling with Rowling…

“You’ll never make money writing children’s book,” said an Authors agent. Then you’re faced with 12 rejections of your manuscript. What now? What next?

Why bother?

What now? Hand your book proposal to another Publisher. What next? Get your book published. Why bother? Because you have worked hard to craft and polish your children’s book manuscript, you feel compelled to get the story published, and why not just go for it? Hmmm 12 publisher rejections is a lot. Maybe you won’t make any money with this book, maybe the children’s genre is not a safe bet?

It’ll never succeed, this was all a wasted effort. I’ll stop. That’s it, enough is enough. Maybe the agent and publishers are right. My book is pointless, it won’t sell.

What if J.K Rowling had ended her thought trail on the above sentiments? 12 manuscript rejections, the utterance of children’s book not making money by her own literary agent. This all happened to the author of the multi-million selling Harry Potter books. What if she never got past no, never got past the disbelief, past the disappointments? She’d be just like the rest of us. Nothing wrong with that. But think of all that she would have missed out on: the film and franchise of her beloved Harry and becoming the World’s 1st Billionaire Author! She still is like the rest of us: enjoying family, taking the bus with the same insecurities and same desire for happiness in life.

So sometimes we have to ignore the critics say eff-U to those lacking faith in your genuine brilliance and trash the insecurities to do what you were born to do, even if it just means getting it outta your system and completing a goal.

Sometimes so called experts o the highly experienced are wrong. Sometimes you have to get their opposing views outta your head because they are just plain wrong and they are more than opposing you they are oppressing you. True leadership and brilliance is rare and sometimes a Ph.D is meaningless other times not. It’s a constant weighing up and making black and white what we do and what we hear.

First analyse and rigorously dissect the good, bad and ugly of your work or goals. If it is truly good enough go for it. Focus on it:

Follow

One

Course

Until

Successful

And then you meet the gatekeepers they say no. Plough through or find another passageway to get into. The CEO, the project manager or the publisher says no. Is it true what they are saying? Sometimes it might not be. You cannot disregard specialist’s. But other times you may have to. That’s the hard part, having to efficiently identify that distinction. Sadly all the titles, qualificatiosn and experience can be futile, and their opinion is simply an abyss into Hell if you follow their ‘advice’.

Ignore them and you may be taking the Stairway to Heaven or Highway to Hell. That’s a distinction to figure out later when you hit the Big Time!
