The Bohemian Illustrator: Izak Zenou

Our Paris born illustrator Izak Zenou makes art that connects “through whims, charms, elegance, humor, surprise and coolness,” as he says.

I love Izak’s work especially his illustrations for the book Bohemian Manifesto. His work was my first introduction to the art form of illustration. It is undeniably the epitome of whimsical chic.

His clients include Henri Bendel, Bloomingdale’s alongside Chanel, Céline and Sephora. Chic with chic Darling!

Zenou was previously a Fashion designer then switched to Illustration because Darlings we Bohemians cannot commit to one form of art… So much talent why constrain ourselves?

He also illustrated Billy Joel’s Ode to NYC children’s book: “New York State of Mind and did the cover art for  Francesca Castagnoli’s novel: “Princess: You know who you are.”

Zenou’s top tip (as posted in JeffyBruce.blogspot.co.uk) on entering the creative arena:

“The advice I would give is believe in yourself, work hard and be patient.  You also have to engage in life and always stay in motion; keep moving forward.  Do what you are inspired to do and eventually, it will all work out.”

My first exposure to his work all began in the charming book Bohemian Manifesto: A Field Guide to Living on the Edge. Written by the Queen of Bohemia Laren Stover. Look out for the forthcoming updated edition of this book with more of his work in. I have been telepathically informed that new chapters are being typed by faeries’ feet as Laren dictates the words. Though Zenou continues with conventional methods to draw new illustrations.

“If I succeed somehow to put emotion in the eyes- I seduce myself. I’m touched, I’m moved and I’m happy with that.” – Izak

Catherine’s debut poetry collection The Quarter Life Crisis Poet”

Here we have a collection of poems I wrote between 2010-2015. It’s essentially 25 years of my existence, much of it was filled with pain, disappointments and sorrow. Maybe you can relate? Out of despair, hope can return and happier days can appear. I hope these poems can make you feel less lonely about the pain we all feel inside. Even if you’re facing a Quarter Life Crisis know that you’re not the only one and you will come out of it stronger. *Hugs!* Join me on my journey….

Poem: Lost Generation (Book: The Quarter Life Crisis Poet)

sskelz_pb3q-john-towner.jpg

LOST GENERATION

We are the heir
To Blair
In academia we make our bet
They get into debt.

Fortune is linear?
Starve, charge and never recharge.
Let’s get skinnier.

We are living it up
Naivety of a pup
In the workplace we are like slaves
Then at night we rave.

Our big break will come.
Chase, trace and encase.
To the beat of our drum

But I will not succumb

You are all so dumb
Here I become

And then some…

An artist.

I escaped to Bohemia

Away from academia
Ran from the curse
In my converse
And then some

Ran away from academia
Away from the curse
In my converse
To Bohemia

ydmnwsnswo0-adrian-sava

The Analysis:

Originally I had discussed the meaning of the poem in this interview Q&A for author of The Heart trilogy book series Audrina Lane found here.

It was written 30th September 2010 after I dropped out of Law school and I was just unleashing my frustrations at academia and the political system in general. The title is an homage to the Beat Generation. The poem is essentially a vision of how my life would unfold. And who knows maybe now I’ve became the Artist? It has a rhythmical pace in the last two stanzas expressing the circumnavigational nature of life which contrasts with an earlier rhetoric: Fortune is linear? This echoes how society dictates how life should unfold. Though truthfully the path to success is more curvaceous it ebbs and flows yet peaks and troughs.

Looking back it’s so ironic that poetry was my source of unleash and then it was like I just stopped and didn’t pick it up again until January 2013 which was one heck of a pivotal year. 2013 was truly the year of The Search of Everything… But that’s for a future blog post.

I didn’t read other poets I just had so much pain and distress and it just manifested in these poems- it needed release. The only poetry training/teaching I’ve had is GCSE English Literature which ended at age 16.

This poem grapples with Quarter Life angst and the futile promises made to Millennials that we could achieve anything we wanted. It’s the most self-explanatory poem and the most foretelling as it was devising my own buried dreams for a Bohemia, a life filled with artists and poets one I wouldn’t attempt to forge until 2013. Subconsciously, I had finally walked off the path of convention and was ready to Manifest Destiny... I just didn’t know it yet!

Have I arrived in Bohemia? Not just yet, there’s still a long way to go…

The only thing getting in my way (at the time of writing) was the guy in the poem that followed after it called 2am…

The Quintessential Bohemian: Laren Stover

Laren Stover is the author of The Bohemian Manifesto: a Field Guide to Living on the Edge.  It is a literary treasure with the most beautiful illustrations by Izak Zenou.

Laren has the beauty, elegance, style and curiosity that perfectly captures a true Bohemian.

This Manifesto is so exquisite to own I cannot tell you how many times it has uplifted me in moments of melancholy and I always get swept away by the romanticism of Bohemianism every time I gaze at the pages.

Laren Stover

She is the Editor-at-Large of Faerie Magazine  Stover has also published a darkly comedic novel called Pluto, Animal Lover: A Novel

Begin 2017 with a Bohemian Bang akin to the sound of champagne Muselets catapulting on the walls of a Nouveau Bohemian’s Upper East Side apartment in the Winter… Well you’re not going to stay in the freezing abode of your Beat or Zen Bohemian friend’s place… Nouveau’s are your friends in Winter they can afford heating and food! Zens and Beats are for the Summer when you’re On The Road… Dandy’s are your all seasons friends because they’re always so charming and chic! But wait what kind of Bohemian are you? There is a delightful Quiz at the end of this Quirky Field Guide to tell you which one you are…

If you’re someone who relishes in curious details from counterculture style, to bohemian must-reads (yes there’s a reading list) then this book is for you. The most charming pages of all are the Case Studies which tell you where these curious creatures live, work and their background. So charming, so dreamy! This book will make you delve into Bohemian Consciousness and maybe make you feel less alone about the freedom and rebellion we crave.

Oona the Actress: Case Study

“Oona is tall Swedish and, unbeknownst to her Bohemian friends, a princess. All her actor friends live in squalid Lower East Side, Brooklyn or Harlem apartments. Flickering lights in hallways, mattresses on the floor, candles in wine bottles, crooked stairs. She was jealous!”

If glamour, creature comforts and beauty still can’t quite escape you then have a peak at The Bombshell Manual of Style. The allure of dazzling beauties became another one of her anthropological quests as she felt they were an “exotic species” as discussed on The Early Show in her interview for the book. The interview was conducted by Lisa Birnbach, author of The Preppy Handbook.)  Another video teaser of the book to watch.

Laren On Bombshells:

“A bombshell believes in her fantasies, she may be wearing a rhinestone bracelet but in her mind it’s Cartier… She doesn’t need to be perfect she still believes she’s a Goddess.”

Purchase The Bohemian Manifesto here.
The Blurb:

Bohemianism is a way of life, a state of mind, an atmosphere. It is not a trend, its a timeless movement. It is about living beyond convention. THE BOHEMIAN MANIFESTO explores and joyfully celebrates the creativity, the originality, and the splendor of a lifestyle and spirit shared by free-thinking, free-living artists, poets, writers, sculptors, musicians, and intellectuals. This is the first book to distill and categorize all the ingredients of Bohemian life. In a witty and engaging style, Laren Stover examines the contents of a Bohemians closet, bathroom, and bookshelf. She explains the allure of absinthe, why it isn’t wise to leave a Bohemian unattended in your home-you could return to find nude nymphs painted on your lamp shades-and how to identify what type of Bohemian you might be.

For the Bombshell in your life or those seeking a New Year Makeover get this book!
The Blurb:

In this glittering beauty and lifestyle guide packed with pearls of wisdom, Laren Stover has compiled everything a woman needs to know to live the Bombshell life: from how to dress and make an entrance to what to eat and where to shop. It tells readers what makes a Bombshell tick; road-tested outfits for 25 occasions; must-have Bombshell sleepwear, handbags, and fragrances; what’s in the Bombshell library; and what she looks for in a man. With scads of little-known facts about real-life bombshells like Liz, Mae, and Lana this fun and ever-so-practical little book is certain to bring out the inner Bombshell in every woman.

What you will find on this blog NouveauBohemian.com

qiew6nko9he-alondra-olivas-1

I am endeavoring to keep this blog focused, creative, inspiring and curated. Consequently only x1 blog posts will be published each month.

On the 15th day of the month there will be a new article either a review about a book or film; an account of my Author’s Journey or a timely essay or comment on the Arts and Life in general.

The long-standing Bohemian of the Month selection where a creative talent chosen by me and a highlight reel of their work, online links and why they’re so awesome, is now published once a season: January, April, August and December. Also posted on the 15th of each of these months.

So less of the immature gifs, less humor, more quality ultimately more recommendations of all things literary and wonderful.

It’ll be coming up to 3 years of blogging on this site on March 24th 2017.
It’s grown up from being previously titled ArtsyJolieGirl.com to now a more mature, curated and inspiring Archive of Bohemianism.

Blogger confession:

Hey guys,

So 2016 has been a year of highs that were astronomical and unpredictable as well as full of lows. My promise for 2017 is to make this blog more focused on championing awesome talent, helping you to discover new talent and showcasing hidden treasures.

I don’t feel I’ve made this happen as much as I’d have liked this year partly because I was so busy and my poetry took off in ways I couldn’t imagine and also because of a secret.

The reveal…

s9cc2skysjm-green-chameleon

I have major reservations about being online, being a blogger, having my face on the internet. Much of this drive to write online was naively fueled by wanting to make friends.

A dread about writing online the things I like is that someday just when I think I’ve made a real connection with someone it turns out that the person has probably just read about me online and the connection and seemingly similar interests were fake or perhaps they sincerely did like me/want to get to know me, so read about me on my blog as a way to get to know me and ingratiate themselves to me.

Either way, I’m done. I’ve just given up the hope. You end going that long without friends and the opposite sex that having it in your life would only become a hassle. A foreign concept.

So here goes, in 2017 I will ensure to give you satisfying and enriching reviews of the books, film and art that I really like. I’ll just put it out there…

It’s really just all about My Readers because without you I wouldn’t be able to write books. You guys me the world to me!

Also be sure to follow me on Twitter: @CattVaughan as I hold occasional Giveaways of my books I’ve published or films and books that I adore.
